The problem was that Asus had not only adopted Windows and jettisoned Linux (which I knew), but the computer didn’t even come with the free services that came with the $199 model. I know there are millions who love Windows. That is their human right. But it fails completely – for me – on usability. So, the Seashell ends up not as a next-generation netbook, but as a Microsoft-occupied computer and all the simplicity of the earlier Asus machines has gone out of the Windows. Every time I open it, I am assailed with stuff I don’t want – Windows Live this, Norton that, Phishing this, Works that – with no obvious way of switching some of them off. When I simply wanted to write a note there was no Open Office and when I tried Word in Microsoft Works it kept asking me to sign up for another 45 days (or whatever) after inputting a key number I was supposed to have but didn’t.

How did this happen? There are various versions. One is that Microsoft suddenly woke up to a serious threat to its market share and became Microhard. It gave Asus a package it couldn’t refuse – a cheap version of Windows as long as it tossed the upstart Linux overboard. True or not, Asus has changed from being a successful proponent of Linux to an evangelist for Windows. The second version is that Asus, seeking a cheap web book to sell globally, used free Linux as a lever to force Microsoft to give it a cheap deal it wouldn’t otherwise have got. A third version is that Linux wasn’t yet up to the job as there were so many different versions and users had difficulty linking with devices such as printers. This theory was given support when Wal-Mart dropped the Taiwanese $199 Green gPC because of poor sales. But it doesn’t explain why the Linux Asus Eee PC was such a roaring success.

From Metro Manila, to Baguio by bus

From Metro Manila, most people travel to Baguio by bus. The bus trip takes about 6 hours. The two major bus lines are: VICTORY LINER. A Baguio-bound air-conditioned bus leaves every hour from its two Manila terminals—Cubao (tel. +632 727-4534) and Pasay (tel. +632 833-5019 to 20). One way fare per person from Pasay is 440 pesos, and from Cubao 430 pesos. From the international and domestic airports in Manila, there are official airport cabs that can bring passengers to the Pasay terminal. Victory Liner also has de-luxe buses with daily trips to Baguio from the Pasay and Cubao terminals. The bus fare (one way per person), both from Cubao and Pasay, is 700 Philippine pesos (around 14 US$). The de-luxe bus offers a choice of one- or two-seater, and has a restroom. It does not make any stop-over. This means that you can get to Baguio in less than 6 hours. The steward will serve cookies and juice or bottled water. This may not be enough, so passengers are advised to bring some foodstuffs with them for the long trip to Baguio. China’s PMI deteriorates in January for sixth month

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) — Conditions in China’s manufacturing sector declined in January, marking the sixth straight month of falls, while the pace of layoffs jumped to the highest recorded in a four-year-old survey published by CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets. The headline PMI index stood at 42.2, rising slightly from 41.2 in December, but well below the 50-level that indicates the manufacturing sector is neither growing nor shirking. The reading was the third-sharpest deterioration on record, following declines in December and November. The monthly survey was launched in April 2004. The survey also showed that job shedding accelerated in each of the last six months. “Despite easing for the second month running, the rate of [PMI index] contraction remains considerable, reflecting rapidly deteriorating market conditions and fears of a deepening economic downturn,” CLSA noted in the report.
